Agar Recipes

General Guidelines

  • Starch   0-8%*  (0 – 40 g / 500 ml)
  • Sugars  0-2%*  (0 – 10 g / 500 ml)
  • Agar      1-3%    (5 – 15 g / 500 ml)
  • Yeast    0-0.2% (0 – 1 g / 500 ml)

* combined starch and sugars should not exceed 8%

2% MEA – Malt Extract Agar – 500 ml ++

  • 10 g – light malt extract powder
  • 10 g – agar

2% PDA – Potato Dextrose Agar – 500 ml ++

  • 10 g – potato starch (flakes)
  •   7 g – dextrose
  • 10 g – agar

2% GWA – Grain Water Agar – 500 ml ++

  • 10 g – agar

++   (optional) add 1 g dry yeast per 500 ml

17 oz = 500 ml
14 oz = 414 ml
12 oz = 355 ml

prep 12 x pp5 petri dishes with 1-1/3 – 2 Tbsp (20-30 ml) 2% MEA agar

  • 8.3 g – light malt extract powder
  • 8.3 g – agar
  • in 14 oz water
